Canterbury


Canterbury is one of the oldest towns in Great-Britain. It is situated on the River Stour. It is a very important religious centre. Lots of pilgrims (pélerins) go there. In 597, Kent was converted to Christianity and St Augustin founded an Episcopal seat in Canterbury. Henry VIII separated from the Roman Catholic Church and founded the Church of England. Monasteries were burnt down. Canterbury became the centre of the Church of England. Today, the archbishop of Canterbury is the most important



In Canterbury, you can see : - The Cathedral, made with stones from Caen (France), where St Thomas Becket was murdered. - A city wall founded in Roman times - The ruins of St Augustin’s Abbey - King’s School (supposedly the oldest school in England)
