Bognor Regis

The sunniest town in England’

Population  - 67 000 inhabitants (= Colmar) 100km south-west of London 820 km west of Strasbourg. Bognor Regis(latin) = ‘Washroom of the King’            Originally a small fishing and smuggling village (contrebande), Bognor was transformed into a fashionable seaside resort (station balnéaire) in the 18th century by a politician named Sir Richard Hotham who found the climate  had many benefits. He bought 650 hectars of land and built large terraced houses to attract rich visitors to the seaside. In 1929 King George stayed in Bognor because his doctor said the sea air would be good for

his lungs (poumons). After that  Bognor was called  Bognor ‘Regis’.
